The Bible discusses sex more than one may originally think. The Song of Solomon book is all about love. King Solomon actually had a lot of wives. In fact, he had over 700 wives. Just looking at chapter one and two of this book, we see many theories and ideas related to sex and love. First there is Scheflen’s Courtship/Flirtation Model. In the second step, the "Courtship Readiness Stage, one person, "...Will probably hesitate to approach unless she receives a fairly clear signal of interest." (14) In verse two, the woman is wearing perfume to get the attention of King Solomon. Later in verse 15, he responds to the situation with, “How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves.” (Song of Solomon 1:15 NIV) Solomon understands that when a woman puts on perfume for him, it means she is interested.
In chapter 2 verse 6 the couple becomes more intimate by embracing one another, arriving at the “Invitations and Sexual Arousal Stage”. Then in verse 7 the man puts the breaks on, so to speak, to not “love” her until she is ready.
In order to continue to populate this earth, people and animals need to have sex. Procreational orientation reflects that, "...Producing offsprings is the primary purpose of sexual intercourse." (15) All other creatures besides humans have sex for solely procreational reasons. "...A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." Mark 10:7-8 (NIV)
When two become one through sex, is God’s ultimate expression of love in the relational form. It is the closest a man and women can get to one another and really know the other person. God gave us sex for recreation. Otherwise, why would he make it so satisfying and fun?
The song below is "Keep Your Hands to Yourself", by Georgia Satellites. This song occurs during the courtship stage between the man and a woman. The woman does not allow the man to hug or kiss her until he makes her his wife. This is great self-control for purity by the woman and very respectable of the man to oblige. The woman wants a Delayed-Involvement relationship, where she is married before sex.
