One of the skills that aid relational competence is empathy. (18) Christ-followers are commanded to be empathetic. 1 Peter 3:8 (NIV) says, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” Many Christians follow these commands and are empathetic towards others. Another verse commanding empathy is Romans 12:15 (ESV) “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Christians that are able to empathetic are able to relate to others better and usually have deeper relationships.
“Often one’s own death is ‘easier’ to accept than the death of others.” (19) Many Christians are at peace with their own death because they understand that their life does not end, but actually begins. Romans 6:23 discusses that when one accepts Jesus Christ as savior, eternal life follows. Knowing that one’s life on earth is very short in the grand scheme of things helps many believers when they are facing death.
