The Bible has its own way to manage ones emotion similar to Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) (12). The next verse in Philippians is, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7 NIV)
When I start worrying about something (which often happens in my business classes) I try to manage my emotions, so I can actually get something done. I first have to realize the source of the activating event of my anxiousness is because of a test grade and realize the thoughts are irrational. I probably got a poor grade due to inadequate studying, not because I do not understand accounting and should switch my major. I then pray that God would dispute my beliefs. Next, I usually have an effective new thought that God is in control and I do not have to worry. Finally, I feel at peace and can move forward.
Goleman discusses that by managing ones emotions they are more emotionally intelligent. (13) Romans 12:21 (NIV) says, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." I have found that this is the best way to manage any situation. Hurting someone because they hurt you will never solve any problem; it will only get worse. However, by returning a hurtful action with a loving one, you may at first confuse the other person, but will ultimately do good to the situation.
