Berger & Calabrase's Uncertainty Reduction Theory describes initial conversations.
"Berger and Calabrese maintained that the driving force in initial encounters is obtaining information about the other person to get to know the person better and ultimately, to reduce uncertainty." (9) The verse above implies that God will help believers answer anyone who may have a question as long as they are full of grace and "seasoned with salt" rather than being harsh and dull. I try to fill my conversations with love and insightfullness so that the people I connect with will "get something" out of our conversation and learn more about God.
Next, I will discuss intimacy, which is one of Burgoon & Hale's Fundamental Relational Themes. "Intimacy is conveyed in a variety of ways, including through self-disclosure and nonverbal displays of affection and immediacy." (10) Burgoon and Hale have concluded that intimacy increases as affection, inclusion, and depth increase. I have found this very true in my Bible Study. The ladies in my study started the year off being shy and not willing to share much about their lives. However, as the weeks progressed, everyone has been sharing more personal information about their lives. Therefore, we have all become closer and more comfortable with each other.
The video below is a song by Matthew West called "The Motions". This song reminds me that I need to break down the walls between Jesus and myself in order to have a more intimate and personal relationship with Jesus.
