Canary & Cody found three categories as to why people enter into relationships.
The first goal is self-presentational. Canary and Cody believe, “From an interpersonal standpoint we are what people think we are.” (11) They believed that some want to enter into a relationship because they want to improve their image. The Pharisees were all about this. They had social gatherings to improve their own status and only had other important Pharisees attend. They would not be seen with a person of a lower social class.
The second goal in relationships is relational. “We spend significant amounts of time, energy and emotion in the pursuit of quality relationships.” (11) God desires a personal relationship with us. In Genesis 3:8-19 God was walking in the Garden of Eden wanting fellowship with Adam and Eve. God loves us so much that he sent his only Son to die on the cross so that we may have eternal life. All we have to do is believe in Jesus Christ, which leads us to Canary and Cody’s final goal in relationships.
“Instrumental goals are task oriented…People often facilitate attainment of instrumental goals…” (11) In order to get to heaven, we must believe that Jesus died for our sins. Romans 3:23 says that we all sin. A few chapters later, the author says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 NIV) Knowing Jesus and what he did for us gets us the best thing we can hope for.
The video below is a song by Kristian Stanfill called "One Thing Remains". This song reminds me that God is always there to have a relationship because his love never fails, never gives up, and will never run out on me.
