The Bible has a plethora of advice for long lasting relationships; especially Romans 12. Committed relationships have the “Cool” Component. Sternberg defines this component as a, "...decision to love someone and the commitment to maintain that love." (16) Romans 12:10 talks about devotion to one another and in order to do this, one must put someone else before themselves.
In my observations, many Christians have the “Quality Time” or “Acts of Service” as their love language. “Love must be sincere.” (Romans 12:9 NIV) A “Quality Time” relationship is sincere by the undivided and focused attention one gives along with the quality of conversation. Christians also tend to serve others more than non-Christians. Verse 11 and 12 in Romans 12 command us serve the Lord and be joyful in doing so.
"Forgiveness plays a critical role in repairing a relationship after a transgression occurs." (17) Depending on the seriousness of a transgression, someone may or may not forgive
their partner. Sometimes it depends on how much love one person is willing give
to their partner. This is also referred to as the "love tank".
We, as humans, sin against God constantly. All sins are created equal in God's eyes no matter the degree. However, according to society, some are worse than others. For example, adultery
is viewed as a terrible transgression against another person. In John 8, the Pharisees brought
an adulterous woman before Jesus and told him the Law requires her to be stoned. Jesus did not condemn this woman, instead, he forgave her.
God has the biggest love tank for us and it will never go empty. To show his love, he sent
his son to die for us, so we would not have to eternally suffer. Just as Jesus forgives others for their transgressions, we should do the same in our own relationships.
The song below is called "Losing" by Tenth Avenue North. It talks about how someone has been wronged and wants to forgive that person despite the difficulty.
